Trials of royalty, hunters & hardship (Trial of Royalties, Hunters, Painful Trial)
The Pubs now all have immediately apparent names (and terrible puns to boot): the Traveling Myules, My Pidona, the Brewing Loanne, the Vintage Vanguard, Fiery Faros, the Magic Carpet (South Mahzoz), the Justerm Beerbar, the Snow Den (Frostburg), the Stanley Ovation, the Whadda Ryblov, the Mini Bar (Tinyville), the Bloody Stake (Podorui), the Zestful Zweig, the Pink Elephant (Rashkuta), the Black Xuan. Yarmouth keeps her Sea Hawk (from the SFC version). Note that these new names do not exist in the Japanese Remaster edition, which seemingly kept the 1995 script as is: they were all invented by one of the translators, who apparently (and unfortunately) amused himself very much. This is plainly outrageous.
Note also that besides the Sea Hawk some other pubs have names in the 1995 SFC edition, as companies in the Business Minigame. They are: Good Fellows (Yamas), Sheherazade (Librof), Vin Santo (Pidona), Zweig Hall (Zweig), Champs Elysées (Loanne). Ignoring this in favor of new stupid joke names is far from professional to say the least.
The Remaster also lists the various 'screens' (regions) of the World Map in a new Adventure Log (which summarizes your playthrough in the form of a journal with sortable entries): Loanne Region, Zweig Region, Pidona Region, Lance Region, Mt. Louv Region, Messana Region, Mt. Demanda, Tepid Sea, The Great Jungle, Mt. El Bourg, Desert Region, Abyss Gate.

NOTES ABOUT THE OFFICIAL TRANSLATION
It was obviously made by someone too clever for his own good, who knew Mana Sword's translation very well (and probably even used it as reference) but tried his hardest not to let it perspire (e.g. with convoluted sentences or at the price of changes in meaning), and who also probably thought that the Japanese text was too dry or too weak (adding text or changing perfectly working lines or jokes even, using uneducated English purposelessly, etc.). Given the discrepancies, there may have seen several translators? or were parts of the translation rushed? [Edit: several translators, as confirmed in the Credits, where we find, among others: Head of Localization: Yuko TOMIZAWA - Localization: Melvin OK, Hiro NAKAJIMA, Matt Erik KATCH - English translators: Neil BROADLEY, Maria MOSBURCKER - Localization Supervisor: Kay MIURA - Localization Manager: Ikuko TSURUTA - Localization General Manager: Shingo HOSOKAWA - QA Translator: Sayuri OTSU - Localisation & QA Director: Yutaka SANO - Senoir Translation Manager, Japanese Language: Andii YAMANAKA - Japanese Business Translators: Kyoko HOTTA GOWLETT, Shigeru TABATA, Juzo HIROSE. Etc. Not sure about their respective roles.]
Everyone goes 'localization' this 'localization' that; but the term is just an erroneous gaming NewSpeak (it would have been an effective 'localization' if there had been a British-English version, an American-English version, etc.): this is plainly just a translation in English (just like for a novel, a graphic novel, a play or a poem: do people 'localize' literature? no) from the original Japanese. That said, whenever you cannot translate rather accurately from English back to Japanese again, and whenever there are plain additions, it is simply a failure as a translation. These are obvious professional translation rules, meant to respect the original text. My two cents as a translator too.
See also the Original Transliterations (1995-96) section.
・Characters: BLACK SPARROW: sad and unacceptable reference to Pirates of the Carribean. - CHARL (Charles en français SVP). - FLURRY? The Japanese is 'Snowman'. - PEONY? where does that come from? certainly not from the Jungle (where peonies do not grow), the Japanese is 'Fairy' (not 'Faery', which would 'localize' - haha - specifically to Ireland, and Fairy is, well, from the Jungle), but I understand how Faerie (the monsters) could be intellectually appealing (monsters come from the world of Fae). - RUKH? haha, a Rukh is a giant bird (the equivalent of the Indian 'Garuda', ahem), or an ostrich, and the Japanese is 'Elephant'. Another thought, but I hope I am wrong: would this in fact be hinting at a bird-like elephant... Dumbo? - TATYANA: if you want to transliterate or translate these correctly you'd have to either chose the English (and so give: Mille-Feuille, Tart) or the French (and so: Crêpe, Éclair, Mille Feuilles, Sorbet, Soufflé): this is just half-baked (pun intended) knowledge. And opting for 'Buné' definitely discredits the 'But there are accents everywhere' excuse. Her last name: ラザイエフ Lasaiev? Razajev? Razaiev? Rzhyev (which would locate their origin in Kazakhstan, where Alexei Nikolai Vera and Boris are not exactly the most common surnames..)? - YANG FAN(G). - CAIN? 'Kane' (like the Citizen) more likely. - MATRIARCH / ARCHFIEND is plain stupid (but probably thought it very clever): the Holy part is gone in Matriarch, the Evil part gone in Archfiend (in loosely Buddhist Asia everyone knows that 魔王 Maoh is the Ruler & Judge of Hell). 'Arch' comes from 'archein' in Ancient Greek (one translation being 'to rule') which is good, but the translator got fixated on this, forgetting all the rest. Something like the Holy Ruler / Evil Ruler (Holy Queen & Devil King if you wanted to make gender apparent, which was not the case in the original Japanese RS3) would have been infinitely better. It should be noted that 神王 (Divine Ruler, from 神王教団 the Church/Order of the Divine Ruler and 神王の塔 the Tower of the Divine Ruler, that refer to the current Child of Destiny, i.e. Sarah & Young Boy - Tiberius & Co. cannot possibly know that there are 2 of them this time) is translated as 'Archlord' which, unless I am much mistaken, points at a male (no gender in the Japanese, again), for no reason. Incidentally, the Adventure Log (Maximus's Ambition) mixes up Archlord & Matriarch (Maximus wants to replace the future Archlord, not the past Matriarch). - SINISTRAL is plain stupid too and a error on the top of it ('sinistral' means left-side-related) although we can see where this comes form (the adjective 'sinister', completely unrelated), better stick to the 4 Demon Lords or something along this line, for 四魔貴族. - Gwayne calls the Sinistrals' phantom clones 'homunculi' (i.e. small, man-made persons), which is obviously an inadequate translation.
・Character creation. The English-speaking community is not familiar to the Chinese concept of being born under a star that determines your fate. Nevertheless, the Roman gods would have been absolutely perfect (mutatis mutandis), because the planets of the solar system bear their names: 辰星 is Mercury、太白 is Venus、螢惑 is Mars、歳星 is Jupiter、填星 is Saturn. So why would anyone choose the Greek gods purposefully instead??? Otherwise, sticking to Class, Rank or Occupation would have been the RPG-safe choice.
・Same remark for Magic: what is the point of even not translating the names of the magic schools (which are the names of legendary beasts that come from Chinese geomancy, popular also in Japan)? Stick to the elements they stand for (also something unfamiliar to the Western community). And why suddenly use adjectives for Sun and Moon magics? Mystery, unless it is a case of ManaSword-ite. Concerning spell names, some translations feel very forced: some transliterations could have stayed (Nap, Self-Burning, Reviver, Water Ball, Moon Shine, etc.) or with slight changes (Solar Wind, etc.). Ray of Hope (for Regeneration Light) is not really acceptable...
・Locations. Beside my remark concerning the new (and very stupid) pub names. The Ice Lake becomes the Arctic Lake, but 'Ice' and 'Arctic' are different words with different meanings in both languages (Arctic means North-Pole-related, like in Japanese – 北極 – but additionally the English comes from the Greek word meaning 'bear' for pointing to Ursa Major, which I doubt very much exists in RS3's world). シノン is neither Shinon nor Sinon, but most probably Chinon (like the wine). ロアーヌ is Loanne in both versions, but it may be a erroneous transliteration of Rouen (usually rendered as ルーアン in Japanese) or of Roanne (usually ロアンヌ in Japanese), both cities located in France too. No need to dwell on the terrible and erroneous Frostburg (for 雪の町 Snow Town), Tinyville (for 小さな村 A Small Village), Flowing Sands (for 乾いた大河 Dry River) or Fairyville (妖精の村 the Village of the Fairies). I guess that there must be a good reason behind this choice, but Louv is plain weird for ルーブ (Rube, Lube, Loob..), especially if you place it in a zone with Anglo-saxon names (Yarmouth, Sea Hawk, Vanguard, Wilmington, etc.), or maybe place it like in Quebec? but Louv is extremely weird in French too. Muenge seems to be more related to Congo than Mongolia... Cannot see any connection that would support Myules rather than Mules. There seems to be a small village named Podorui in Romania (unique iteration found in a Norwegian religious magazine); Podol is in Ukraine. Not sure about リブロフ, a town founded by Russian-like emigrates at the entrance of the desert, either: the -ov/-off form means 'son of -' which originally would not work for town names (except when the town was named after a man, or in former Tartar territories where -tov actually comes from tay = mountain); but there is a place named Rybolov in Russia. The Show of Wonders translates グレート・フェイク・ショー 'Great Fake Show'. 西の森 is simply the West(ern) Forest; where does Westos come from? Game of Thrones? 最果ての島 is the Island (which 'World's End' forgets) of the Extreme Confines, of the Farthest Reaches.
・Techs (Skills or Techniques). 'Glimmer' (found only when you try to erase a tech you have not mastered yet) could possibly work if it were not intransitive in its verb form: 'spark' is perfect as a noun and as a transitive verb (as is the Japanese 閃き 閃く). 'Acquiring' instead of 'Mastering' is just some case of MS-ite (besides, the Master Ring mentions 'mastery': how on earth are you supposed to know what mastery is if until now all you have heard is 'acquiring'? the Japanese is unequivocably consistent - 極意). *** Artful Slash for かすみ二段 is gibberish (at least Double Mist is interesting and presents the gist of it: the first slash hides the real, second slash). Brusque Slice is grossly incorrect (失礼剣 is a Rude Sword because you show your back or butt). Riptide sounds decently cool at least. Doppelslasher & Shimmering Slash are grossly imprecise (not 'slashes' but 'swords': Clone Sword, Sword Flash). Hyper(space) Slash, why change Spider Net, Scare Voice, Star Burst, etc. (transliterations). Riposte works but it is an unrelated, new name. There is no running in the Running Slash. Gravedigger is crap 'inventive' translation. Incorporeal Stance is more Stanceless. Bullrush is a Bull Crush, Crash or Clash. Bare-handed Grab/Catch. 太刀 = Rush? (Troubled) Nature Dance is a much better translation of the untranslatable 乱れ雪月花 than Scattered Petals. Earth or Stone Crescent (Moon) is a good job too. Exorcist does the trick. Everfrost Blade is pure invention. 霧氷剣 Silver Frost Sword. Skull Crush. Tree Chop. All the アクセル stuff stands for Accel(erated/eration) so Accel Turn. Blade Roll. Dimension Chop. Genghis Khan. Orbit Bora. Hard Hit. ジャストミート = Perfect Timing? (Japanese baseball idiom). Rotator is just lame. Earthquake Strike or something. Aerobit. At least Gravity 'Break' sort of renders 活殺. Shell Split does the job. Bless? Breath? Swing'n'Run (baseball again)(JP national sport, after all). Midas Hand & Spell Enhance. Quick Draw, Swallow (Re)Turn Draw. Shatter Staff. Accel Sniper. Mindstare. Lightning Pierce. Final Letter (Eulogy is plainly erroneous, look up in the dictionary). Awakening was good (Wake Up --> Alarm? pfff). Were Buster. Nurse Heal. Serpent Sword: if you want to go Swedish do it all the way: Ormsvard? unclear eh? 石突き = Ferrule / possibly Stone Stab or Thrust play-on-words. Aiming. Brain Trim? Dragon (Blast). Double Dragon was pretty cool. Beast God Stab/Thrust. Now, Giant Swing for 大車輪 is plain stupid because there is another Giant Swing in the Martial Arts (we get it is the litteral for the gymnastic term but swing is for maces here (confusion possible), so compromise with (Great) Wheel). Same with 無双三段 (Peerless Triple Strike) there is already an eponymous sword (wrongly translated too...). Swing. Why make things complicated with Paean? (and the Japanese is poem/song). Psycho Burst. Trishooter. Sew. Random Arrows. Quick Arrow. Shot Wave. Rapid-Fire? Continuous Shot. Shadow Kill. Fairy. Focus does the job. Not Tumble but Throw. 稲妻 is Lightning or Bolt not Thunder. 短勁 is very difficult (Energy Punch, One-Inch Punch) but Pressure Point is wrong. Reverse Throw. Evil Crusher. Trans-Dimension(al) Persona. 練気拳 is difficult but no Punishing there (but homophonically Multi-Punch). Dragon God Firefist/Inferno (this is not Dragonball). Rise of the Damned is a mistranslation (Undead Domination/Control = Leonid dominates/controls the other Undead). Gentle Touch. Shield Rush. Song for All?
・Formation Skill / Fusion Spells. 時間差攻撃 is a feint attack with two players (volleyball). ツインビーラッシュ is not a Bee Rush but a Twin Rush. 高速ナブラ is High Speed Nabla. Shiva Triangle does the job perfectly. Cross Driver (not Drive). エクセルドライバー is not a Light Drive but an Accel(erated/eration) Drive. 花鳥乱月 is a play-on-words with 花鳥風月 (the traditional depiction of the beauties of nature, with flowers 花, birds 鳥, wind 風 and the moon 月), in which the character 風 (wind) was replaced with 乱 (riot, war). Quite interesting that for some terms the translators favored the Chinese pronunciation; such it is for 神龍舞, the Dance of Shinryu (Divine Dragon) in Japanese, not Shenlong. Same for 千手観音, the famous 1000-Hand Kannon in Japanese. How weird (and erroneous). Multi Counter is just that. クロスボウボルト = Crossbow Bolt. I have no clue as to where Dracoshivers comes from. ラビットストーム is a Rabbit Storm, not a Rabbit Stream. ドップラーロア = Doppler Roar (as in 'Doppler effect'). ギャラクシィ is not Galactic Rift but simply Galaxy.
・Items. Sanguinator for ブラッディソード is inexact: Bloody Sword. スパイダーソード: why suddenly the old English? Spider Sword. Right, why bother translating Gekkabijin (月下美人) at all, like the Japanese everyone knows what it means when we read the word..; better by far would be 'Beauty Under the Moon' or 'Queen of the Night' (the translation for the eponymous plant). Triumvirate? the transliteration is simply Triple Sword. 戦斧 is simply Battle Axe. I do not know what to do with ブローヴァ (MS: Brover; Official, impossible given the Katakana: Bullova); MS's seems likely. ホークウインド is Hawkwind so why the heck (again) change it to Falconwind??? バトルハンマー is simply a Battle Hammer. Life Staff, because life (生命) is not vivacity. Cudgel / Club: clear case fo MS-ite. 仕込み杖: Swordstick or more expressively Sword-Cane. ルツェルンガード can be transliterated as Lucerne Guard, or translated exactly as Lucerne Hammer. How can a Will Spear (ウィルスピア) become a Spontoon? 'Therian' does not mean 'Beastman' (seriously, check your dictionary; 'therianthropic' would), so yeah, again 獣人の槍 is Beastman's Spear. ブリッツランサー Blitz Lancer. 竜槍スマウグ Dragon Spear Smaug (Tolkien created the word: there is no alternative spelling). Elder Bow and Catalpa Bow (both make reference to the wood used to craft the bow). ドビーの弓 Dobby's Bow. Mortuus? seriously? 死の弓 is Death Bow. 炎獣の盾 & 炎獣の革: Flame Beast (炎獣) speaks for itself, but what is an Ignus? mystery. Same remark for 魔獣 Magic Beast (Morax is a very specific Demon, like Alloces & Co.). For the Evade/Deflect 'Guard' shields (visibly small & round), some Japanese names were simply abandoned for various (unrelated or erroneous) historical names: Rondache (Smart Guard), Heater (Light Guard). The Excel Guard was also renamed after a random material (Sterling). Will Guard (like Will Spear, e.g.). Wonder Bangle is the correct transliteration. 兵士 is a Soldier, not a Squire.. 道士 may be more a Monk than an Ascetic. ボーンブレスト Bone Breast (as is, taken from a full skeleton, not a plate). Most probably, ブリガンディ is correctly a ブリガンディーン (Brigandine). (Super Robot Taisen and its Brigandi/Brigandy is posterior to RS3; Brigandi is also a last name.) Why would 湖水のローブ be something else than a Lake Robe? or ビーストレザー a Beast Leather? I do not quite know what to make of シルバーチェイル; neither did the official translators, apparently; but 'Mail' is much better than the unlikely 'Trail'. For the 5 magic armors you can pick up on your way to the 4 Gates and in Huang Castle, see the note about magic translations, right above. ロードアーマー Lord Armor. 武神の鎧: so everyone knows what/who Bujin is, right? right..: the God of War's / Wargod Armor would make the point. 白銀の鎧: White Silver / Platinum Armor. サイコメット Psycho Helmet (メット being a known abbreviation of ヘルメット). 角かぶと = Horned Helmet. クロースヘルム = Close Helm. サラサのシャツ: sarasa can mean the material only (calico) or additionally its distinctive Indian pattern (printed calico): Calico Shirt would be the shortest correct translation. ナッツのチョッキ: no reason to conjure the French here (which means something different in French, btw): Nuts's Vest? 武道着 Budougi (who understands that?) is a Martial Uniform. Since 強化弓 was officially translated by Reinforced Bow (and I did not complain), 強化道着 must be translated as Reinforced (Martial) Uniform (I doubt that 'padding' makes it that much more resistant). ガントレット is a simple Gauntlet, no need to 'Steel' it. 銀の手 is a Silver Hand, not a Glove. 鬼神小手: why use 'Wargod' now (it was in 武神の鎧 Wargod Armor)? especially incorrectly here? Demon/Ogre God Bracers or Gauntlet. Another clear case of Mana Sword-ite is 疾風のくつ (MS: Hurricane - pretty cool / Official: Cyclone Shoes / correctly: Gale Shoes). While 強化装甲 is certainly a Reinforced Armor, フォートスーツ is certainly not a Reinforced Suit, but a Fort Suit. タイニイフェザー Tiny Feather. The Ice Sword (氷の剣) was probably mistranslated as 'Everfrost' to match this 永久氷晶 (Eternal Ice Crystal) - wrongly matched, since they do not have the same name at all in Japanese. 霧の水環: Water Ring of Fog OK, Mist OK, but Myst NG. ガードリング = Guard Ring. 水心の爪 = Water Claw. 死の指輪 = Death Ring (they couldn't find some Latin gibberish this time). 妖精のハーブ = Fairy Herb (to misread ハーブ as ハープ means that this was a really poorly done job). 生命の素 = Source of Life --> Root of Life, Life Root. Note that the description for 'Twig of Life' is completely wrong, as it does not 'recover max HP for a single ally', but SP, MP and LP (and not HP...). 香薬 more probably Herbs (in Chinese medicine) than Salts?
・Item Stats. The same wording is used for good resistance (Rubber Soles renders 'immune to lightning-based attacks' - in fact, item def x3 vs. Bolt, which is very far from immunity) and total immunity (Royal Ring renders 'immune to fainting' = the character cannot be inta-killed anymore): a grave mistranslation that confuses the player.
・Business Game: Most changes are improvements over MS's fanslation, or rather they correct his mistakes. Other than a few debatable transliterations and names based on places translated elsewhere in the game (Louv, etc.), the official translation is very close to what I had reworked (see the Business Game Notes), with some mistakes remaining still (Shanze Lize? El Bourg? Fever Mining? Jason Cotton? Fuber? etc. etc.). If this translator (a different one, supposedly) was given the benefit of the doubt, I would surmise that he had wanted to erase most (but if so why not all?) references to real people's names (mainly the former American Presidents) and places (but then why Eifel?).
・Ruling / Mass Combat Game: Besides the weird reply-to-no-question line when you sit on the throne, the translation of the domestic investments in Social Policy or Industry are a bit strange (stranger than the Japanese, I mean): Rock-Bottom / Special Sale / Retail Price (for 激安い 安い & 普通)... - Probable mixup between the official translations of 強撃陣 (MS: Strong Atk, officially translated as Last Ditch, should really be 'Full Force') and 背水の陣 (MS: Back Water, officially translated as Full Force, should really be 'Last Ditch'). - In the Siege of Librof / Ryblov, when you kill all trebuchet soldiers with your archers ('100 enemies Hit'), the following message does not make any sense: 'Battle Report! 0 Trebuchet soldiers down.'
・Monsters: Very inconsistent. Probably the worst cases of ManaSword-ite (names in one word split into two, in two glued into one, in the two same words but reversed order, etc. etc.), some improvements of course, fortunately, some mistakes still too. See these Random Notes about Enemy Names.
・Dialogues. Herman: Are we in the Simpsons now? Is this famous Sea Captain Horatio Peter McCallister in disguise? - The Professor: spills who is the Professor before the song and the punchline, lol. Also, the song is not timed properly. - Lots of inconsistencies, especially singular/plural in Q&As (which is to be expected if the translation is not careful, as word gender markers and agreement are much fewer in Japanese), e.g., speaking of your party to Charl, Thomas says 'I know them' even if there is only one party member; the man in front of the Archlord Tower has 'Divine Order robes for sale' and your main character will 'take it', etc., etc.). And of course all the stupid jokes here and there (like how 'People wouldn't be caught dead' in the Deadman's Well...) and the plain out-of-nowhere additions.
・Nonsensical fusion spell sentence: 'This fusions spell [...] places casters in the [X] formation' - oh, does it?
ADDITIONS
While many issues were not addressed in this edition, it is not a mere porting, and besides (beautiful) reworked area & battle backgrounds and techs & spells visuals, as well as animated bosses and rewritten dialogues depending on your main characters, there is some new content.
AUTO-SAVE
There is now a very convenient Auto-Save that does just that after a battle or after entering a new room.
ADVENTURE LOG
The Adventure Log records the places you have been to, the people you have met, and the quests you have completed, readable by scenario, order or region.
NEW GAME PLUS
In the NG+ (you can use a previous save to restart the adventure) the following do seem to carry over:
- Characters' Stats (SP/MP, Weapon/Magic Levels), Mastered Skills & Magic spells (except for Black who inherits from current Herman), Formations & sparked F-techs.
- Money and bank account.
- All items, including those in storage, except all story-related items (Silver Gloves, Dream Gem, Maximus' relics, items form the Holy Trials, the Holy Grail..) and spells (the 4 strongest Earthly Magic spells).
- Business Minigame: your own capital and Bargaining Skills (except Fullbright's Speech).
- Mikhail's Mass Combat Tactics.
Some bugs occur with NG+ that can be exploited (see below).
THE MAYOR
As you might recall, the mayor of Kyrdlund takes advantage of your good will and traps you in the Sacrificial Cave - thank the Matriarch that Nina is always there. In the Remaster, there is an extra bit after you have defeated Algernon: go talk to the Mayor again, and you have the choice to get decently compensated financially (10k aurums) or emotionally (stress release). That's about it...
PHANTOM MAZE
The Phantom Maze is the new dungeon.
Complete mapping and story in the the Walkthrough > Phantom Maze section,
and the actions and techs of all the Phantom Maze old-new bosses here.
THE DREAM OF THE 5TH GATE
After closing the 4th Gate, there is an extra cutscene showing a dream: your main character finds him/herself at the entrance of the Flowing Sands and receives a warning from the Matriarch not to proceed further because of the trap laid by the Archfiend; the scene changes and you now eavesdrop on nothing less than a discussion between the Archfiend and the four Sinistrals (the Sinistrals wonder about a 5th Sinistral, the Archfiend brushes their questions away and may be showing you where the 5th Gate is). The trap is obviously to make the 2nd Child of Destiny come to the Abyss too. This raises several new questions, as even though the Matriach and the Archfiend are supposed to have died respectively about 315 and 615 years earlier, they are communicating with and/or connected to you.
CENSORSHIP
Vanguard Murder Case: after the murder there are claw marks instead of blood stains.
While the Room of Roses is still there, the Torture Room in Castle Leonid has disappeared.
On the other hand, the female monsters' n*****s are still there, which is surprising to say the least, given various national (USA especially) and religious (Asian-Muslims especially) issues around the globe. I do not complain; the closer to the 1995 original, the better.
BUGS, GLITCHES & DIFFERENCES
There were a good number of tricks, secrets, exploits, bugs & glitches in the SFC version (see the Trivia section).
Listed here: which have been corrected, which are still there, which are new.
CORRECTED
- Switch Main Character Bug.
- LV 7Star Sword duplication. But there is a new bug now to get it (see below).
- Now Herman turns into Black when defeating Forneus even if this was your 4th Abyss Gate with a full party.
- The Maximus quest does not conflict with the Business minigame anymore.
- Yan Fan's conflicting events corrected.
- Axel Spin (Axel Turn) can now spark Reverse Orbit (Orbit Borer) correctly.
- Wormhole works correctly.
- Crypt Elder equipped with the relic Glory Staff (now with Rune Staff).
- Dream Eater quest: Muse with Sharl's script at the start; Spirit Stone shattering glitch.
- Cannot jump from the bridge in the Rotten Sea Ruins anymore.
- Buné's Mass Combat now occurs normally after one Abyss Gate is closed.
- Medicate, Lunar Light & Ray of Hope do not dispel invisibility anymore. But new visual glitch: Medicate & Ray of Hope make your invisible character 'visible' but still untargettable (so technically still invisible). On the other hand, attacks after Oblivion's Wings of Light while Invisible dispel the status but your character's icon is still invisible (visual glitch).
- Mass Combat and Sneak Attack on Huang City: the time achieved (1, 5, 10 or 20) in the Mass Combat now reduces the number of enemies inside Huang Castle at the end. (Which is not necessarily a good thing.)
- Your party is rested properly after sleeping at Vanguard Inn and defeating Forneus’ minions.
- Actually, a lot of the small glitches of the SFC game were corrected.
- Bai Meiniang appearing glitch when meeting Nora for the first time with Herman/Black in your party (Herman/Black now appears as supposed to).
- The elevator in the Archlord Tower now visually functions properly.
AS THEY WERE
- Royal Ring duplication and money trick, Dolphin Figurine duplication.
- Repeater bug.
- Can battle the White Dragon Lord as long as you do not take the Everfrost Sword.
- Paul's 'See ya / So long and take care' glitch.
- Oblivion Dancing Leaf / Waterball Poisoning.
- F-tech Spell Deflect still doesn't work.
NEW BUGS
- A different bug allows the duplication of the LV Triones Blade. See the Trivia section.
- In the same battle you steal a Triumvirate Greatsword (Triple) from a Giant, if you change it into to the Triumvirate Shortsword it will stay that way even after the battle is over.
- Casting Reviver and activating it may make the Revived character gain one level in Shucho magic and learn Air Slash. To fix this, go to a magic seller, remove and re-buy one magic spell from your original Earthly Magic. But with this bug you can make almost any character learn and use all 4 Earthly Magics.
- With NG+ several bugs occur that may be exploited (or not):
* Item duplication: Any item can be duplicated if you equip Herman with them before his transformation to Black and start a NG+ (Herman's data is copied onto Black when he transforms but the two sets of items remain and are put into your storage).
* Bug or not, there is no point in leveling up Black for a future NG+, since he inherits his stats from Herman..
* Bug or not, in NG+ Mikhail can now withdraw from Loanne's Treasury by using a Card gotten by another main character..
* With NG+, you can get all of Mikhail's Mass Combat R&D Tactics. But after you have bought all of them, if you try to buy one more, the game freezes and you have to reset.
* Not a bug, but the non-party character growth can be exploited in NG+ to max some of your characters' stats after a couple of playthroughs: just recruit the target characters (or everyone, even, since it works on all except Black) before going into the Abyss. Note that the characters that you do not use get much stronger than the ones you have in your regular party - the irony of it all or the virtue of laziness?
* MC Artificial +1 Stat Boosting [Steam, PS4, JP v. at least]: Start a NG+, choose a star & a weapon, do not confirm but cancel, choose another weapon: the previous bonus remains. This can be done for all 6 weapon possibilities. Works only if you have not leveled the skill levels in a previous game (start a new game, save as soon as you gain control of your character, then using that save start a NG+). Works for all MC (once you have done it for all 6 weapon choices for 1 characters, go back to the character selection page and repeat).
* If you start a NG+ with Mikhail or Thomas as MC (all weapons except None), save and use this for another NG+ with some other MC and Mikhail & Thomas as recruits won't have any magic (normally Solar 5 & Water 2 respectively).
* Changing your Main Character is also possible on the Remaster: https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm37958546.
- The Aquatic trap in Herman's Treasure Cave does not do anything.
- In Sarah Commander Mode, the Galaxy spell damages your party too.
- Bug or new feature ? 'The Abyss is getting stronger": Oblivion's HP and atk pwr keep increasing in its last Void form (RNG-dependent occurence).
- Sarah does not say anything when leaving Yohannes after closing the 4th Gate.
- Silver Glove: 1) Visual glitch: the sub weapon may seem to cause the effects of the main weapon (e.g. Knee Split main & Club sub: Club goes first and may stun). Linked to the fact that effective hit order and visual order are reversed (this causes visual glitches with Stealthy Swing: invisible although hit-able / visible but actually invisible, etc.). 2) Bug: If you use a tech with a chance of Insta-Death/Petrify as main, and if Insta-Death/Petrify activates, this main attack plays first and will repeat to the next enemy as long as the Insta-Death activates or there are no more enemies. This means that coupled with the 100% Insta-Death Trick, you can defeat a whole group of enemies in one go (Hasten Time by fast character-->Insta-Death/Petrify tech).
- In Leonid's Castle, spend the night in the smaller room with a party of 6: you can move around before the 6th characters joins and make him/her follow you... Similar glitch in the Pub in Yarmouth (Yamas) or Podorui (Podol): if you try to kick out characters that forcibly stay with you, they go talk to the bartender, refuse to leave and move toward you to rejoin your main character, but you can move around too and make them follow you...
- Dialogue frames sometimes disappear.
- Business Minigame: Some companies disappear from rankings for one turn. Some firms become negative for one turn.
- In Muse’s Nightmare, if you LP-kill Muse against Tapirs, she will be back as if nothing had happened at the throne room door... (Kill her off against the Dream Eater if you must.)
DIFFERENCES
- No recruitment limit.
- Charl (Sharl) has 23 STR with the Silver Hand now (instead of 21 on SFC).
- Business Minigame: Numbers on the Remaster seem to go significantly higher than on SFC (x1000 by endgame), suggesting different growth formulae.
- While Ruling Loanne you cannot make 'time' pass by standing up / sitting down repeatedly anymore.
- Item Counters (Flame Mantle's Self-Burning, Everfrost Blade's Freeze Barrier) activate before skill counters (Counter, Matador, Disarm..) and prevent them. Bummer.
- First time in Snow Town, the snowmen do not move anymore when off-screen (but using a door, placement differs).
- There are additional battle backgrounds (mainly towns and houses). See the Backgrounds section.
- Semi-hidden exits, rooms, stairs, skull-chests are now very obvious.
The semi-hidden doors (Herman's Treasure Cave, cave below World's End, Castle Leonid, Undersea Palace, Deadman's Well):
Or the semi-hidden stairs (Mount Taftan, Death Desert):
And the skulls that replace chests in the Sacrificial Cave, Buné's Lair and the Archfiend Palace now glimmer for very easy pin-pointing:
- There are now safe passages among the Life Traps in Buné's Lair.
- Mt. Loob lost its fiery autumnal foliage; Mt. Louv is now a sad, dying mountain:
- Now footprints do not stay in the snow, but disappear progressively (exactly like in the original SFC Tales of Phantasia).
- Several techs differ visually, including Tiger Break, for which the path of your Ki does not prolong your character's path anymore (it is always horizontal, which is really weird).
